Orange Obsession

My obsession with the color orange started when I was about six.   My bed’s new duvet was decorated with cartoonish little girls wearing bright orange dresses.   And behold, my matchy-matchy tendencies were born.   I begged my parents to paint my room bright orange…not melon, not coral, but full-strength crayon box orange.  For me, it was bliss!
After a few years, the room was eventually repainted…using plenty of primer, I imagine, and my love of orange lay dormant throughout the next few decades (with the exception of neon orange during the eighties!).
Then it happened….Scandinavian designers of modern furniture began reintroducing the color in their plastic molded chairs, and modular furnishings.  And before we knew it, orange had seeped back into our subconsciousness.  Each year, Pantone introduces their pick for color of the year.  This year it is “Tangerine Tango“.   And just like that….orange is back!

Using orange in decor doesn’t require the commitment of repainting every wall,  but a splash of this fun color will definitely brighten the room.  Add an accent lamp, throw pillows, or anchor the room with an orange patterned rug.   We’ve seen some beautiful combinations for kids’ rooms….pair orange with aqua for a unisex nursery, or orange with pink for a whimsical girl’s room.  We have devoted an entire Pinterest board to this fun color.  You can browse it here in its entirety.  For a quick orange fix, here are a few great ideas:

Indulge in some Caviar – For Your Nails!

Caviar?  Yes please!  We are positively obsessed with this new look for nails.  Created by London based company, Ciaté, this super-glam polish is studded with beads.   According to Ciate, “the inspiration behind the Caviar Manicure™ came about when Charlotte, the company’s Creative Director, was looking to create 3-dimensional nails for a front cover magazine shoot and wanted to develop something feminine, indulgent yet delicately extravagant.  The finished effect gives nails an instant, sophisticated look.”  In the U.S., Sephora is carrying the Caviar Manicure™ kit.   While it may not be for everyday use, we think it would be gorgeous for special events!  Take a look below for application tips, as well as an instructional video.

Read Across America…With The Lorax!

March 2nd is Dr. Seuss’ birthday, as well as the National Education Association’s Read Across America Day.  This year, the date corresponds with the release of the movie, The Lorax.  Today, the New York Public Library is hosting a national reading event.  Zac Efron and Danny DeVito, who voice the film’s characters, will be reading at the event to students from local New York public schools.

What can you do on this special day?  Pick up a book and read!  Set aside time to either read to your child, or if your child is an independent reader simply set a good example by reading at the same time.  Children who read, or are read to, are more likely to succeed academically.  So give your child a head start by sharing a good book!

And in the words of the great Dr. Seuss, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
― Dr. Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!
